Dr. Martin Luther King on Economic Development

Hi All!

Today is the day set aside to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. Here in his own words was his position on economic development and ending poverty.

Now that we are coming out of the greatest recession since the Great Depression, do you think his position still stands? Is it a matter of having the will to remove poverty?

We saw banks that were deemed to big to fail. Banks that laundered drug cartel money and no one at the bank was arrested or even charged. Yet if you or I commit a crime we are looking at many years in prison even with a good legal team. Will America ever have the will to make the laws apply to everyone?

Leave a comment sharing your thoughts?

Angels and Good Samaritans

Hi All!

I have been MIA because I was hit by a truck as I was crossing in the intersection. This person had to see me coming towards him. I have been out of it from taking the medicine to deaden the pain. I won't take narcotics which is what they give you here whenever you leave the emergency room. When I have undergone physical trauma, my best course of action to sleep and let my body rest.

This is not ancient Rome and
             pedestrians crossing the street
             not fodder for your chariots.

Allah sent his angels to cushion my fall. This is the only way I can explain not having broken bones from this accident. Three good Samaritans actually sat on the ground with me to make sure I didn't move. Numerous people called 911. Others stopped and directed traffic away from me. I was blessed that so many people stopped to give assistance. Many people stayed to give witness statements to the police. I was taken directly to the trauma unit, where they went to work on me immediately. I am blessed to not have any broken bones. I was kept in trauma for many hours until all my tests, x-rays and other results came back. I am just going to have to take my time and let my body heal and watch for any signs of fractures.

I thank Allah for blessing me, because the situation could have and should have been a heck of a lot worse. I thank all the folks who are my Facebook friends for your prayers and well wishes. All are appreciated. I know my Lord has blessed me royally, because it could have been so much worse. I give thanks and will try to live up to this blessing.

Peace,

Michelle

Fashion Week Scottsdale

Hi All !

Last night Scottsdale and the Valley had Fashion Night Out. This is an annual event to commemorate the start of New York Fashion Week . The event is put on by Westcor which owns the major malls in the Valley like Scottsdale and Chandler Fashion Malls and Keirland Commons.

The event is always high energy. Of course you start the evening out with Neiman Marcus. Neiman's always has a first rate fashion show, impeccable food and the best mocktails to be found. This year you were able to have your photo taken with props. Very nice.

Not my greatest shots but the front on shots had to deleted because they were to blurry to salvage.

I left Neiman's and headed to Barney's of New York. Champagne, regular water and fizzy water decorated were the order of the day. They had new staffers who were MUCH friendlier. Smile. I tried a new product they are carrying which comes from the rainforest. The line is called "RAHUA" (pronounced RA-WA). So I'll have to let you know how it works out. Barney's had a soap that was $25.00 a bar. I don't know where it serves it purpose or not but the bar itself was a work of art.

I left Barney's and went to Aveda's Salon and Spa because I wanted a new eye treatment. I have Grave's disease which makes my eyes look puffy all the time. (Worse case scenario is the bulging eye syndrome. My sister had reached this point and had to have eye surgery to relieve the pressure). Crystal did a fabulous job. She showed me how to not apply the eye shadow to the corner of my eye which would enhance the puffiness and drag down the eye lid. Instead she showed me where to add a lighter color to reduce the look of puffiness and to bring the lines of my eyes up. Sorry I didn't take a picture.

So what are you doing to enjoy Fashion Week in you area. Girls Nite Out, a local fashion show, a fundraiser? What's on your agenda?

Looking forward to your comments.

Success How Bad Do You Want it

Hi All!

Sunday in my day for motivation and inspiration. Today's topic,"Success : How Bad Do You Want It!". Here's a great video that I really like about this topic of being willing to give your all to succeed.

I was impressed by the analogy given of how bad you had to want your success. I remember when I decided to quit working and go back to school full-time.  Out of state no less. Everyone thought I had a screw loose, except my Daddy. He asked if I was serious, I said , Yes. He paid my rent so I didn't have that to worry about. I was determined to go straight through the three years of undergrad and the three years of law school. When my friends were partying I was working 36 hours from Friday to Monday morning tracking air freight shipments, 12 hours on and 12 hours off. The building was isolated and I was the only one there. My supervisor would come in the wee hours of Sunday morning with her gun and some of her friends, they would hang out so I could sleep. I didn't know if there had been a problem at the site. She didn't say and I didn't ask.

I knew I had to finish what I had started and nothing and no one was going to stop me. I pledged a sorority in my sophomore year. I came off line and  and ran for Student Government Association. I won. I was the only the second female SGA President and the first junior in the school's 125 year history.

When I went to law school, the first week we were told, "Look to your right and look to your left, most of you won't be here in three years. I went up to the dean and introduced my self and said, "See you in three years". An I did. I worked through law school as well.

How bad do you want it? What have you given up to be successful?

What are the boundaries you will not cross to be successful? Me, I insisted on standing on my feet and not on my back to complete my mission.

Can't wait to hear your comments. Looking forward to them.

KLOUT update Score is now 62

Hi All!

I got an update yesterday that my KLOUT.com score had jumped to 62.  They now view me as a Broadcaster having influence over under a thousand people. Sounds good doesn't. Smile but what does this really mean?

Per Klout , "You create content that is spread throughout your network and drives discussions". You are influential in 15 topics.

Now the question is how does this translate into something usable? My spin on this is that when people see you have a higher Klout score they are more inclined to give a listen as to what you are sharing , selling ,etc.

What's your view on Klout as a measure of your clout. Smile

Looking forward to your comments.

What Makes A Person A "Creative"..

Hi All!

I was sitting and contemplating the fate of the Universe (Smile) when the thought crossed my mind as to what makes a person a "Creative". You might use the word talented, I like Creative. I define "Creative" very broadly as in taking one thing and turning it  into something else. I know that is extremely broad, but I'm an inclusive person. Smile. I have had people look and my work and say,"I can never do that". I'll suggest that they grab some wire and just start playing around with it, no agenda. I have been saddened by the number of times the person will say I don't have any talent. Now mind you this person may be wearing a seed bead bracelet that they made, something I wouldn't  touch with a ten foot pole as seed beads hurt my eyes. I can't tell you how many times I have had this conversation and it really saddens me.

I've often wondered if its a confidence issue. You have to have an open mind that you are at least competent to learn the basics. My position is that everyone is a creative, you just have to find out what your creative talent is. No, you are not restricted to one talent. The problem comes in when folks for whatever reason don't have the confidence to try and find out what that talent is.

Take my youngest for example, she is known as an extremely talented artist (this is per Scottsdale Artist School, not proud Mommy). She wanted to expand to sports. She played volleyball, not well. She ran track, not well. She discovered cheer leading, stunting not dance. Now let me give you some background on why this is surprising. This is my daughter who from ages 2-8 would fall on a smooth surface, with no one near her. Her sister and I would wait for it to help her up. Yes, I had her eyes, hearing and balance checked, all perfect. Baby girl is extremely analytical. When she started school, she would sit and watch the other kids and then decide who she wanted to play with and what she wanted to play. She is also my child that you could set  her meal and her dessert in front of her and dessert was not going to be touched until she finished eating her food. She is still the same way at 14. (Very old soul).

Cheer team stunting

So, now Ms. Artist who had never shown any inclination towards coordination or dancing is excelling on her  cheer team. Why because she was confident enough to not be afraid to fail.

Another example is a volunteer class that I taught at City North in north Phoenix. Grandparents, parents and kids ages 4-14 made up the participants. I took wire pliers and various items to give some examples. I told them I was only going to show then how to start and finish off the wire. What they would make was solely up to them. The adults groaned and stated they had no talent, the kids jumped right in. The finished projects that came out of this class were amazing. One Mother who had groaned the loudest made a perfect 5 inch peace sign. Another Mother wrote her name in wire perfectly, not an easy task. One kid took the wire and made a mask. I saw him a year later and he told me his mask is still hanging on his bedroom wall.

Peace sign made of bullets. Creepy but creative

Coffee bean Peace sign
Creativity can be those biscuits that float out the oven or those "old world" crafting skills that have been handed down for generations in your family and you picked up the gauntlet and took it to a higher level. Told you everyone is Creative. Smile.

My bottom line on this is that you have to at least try whether you think you can do it or not. If you don't have confidence you can do it, FAKE IT and try.

What creative endeavor have you done that you didn't know or think you could do? Leave a comment and if there's a picture of it  online leave a link.

Thanks
